Popping with Color (and a Giveaway!)

Disclosure: Wayfair provided me with product compensation for this post. All ideas and opinions, however, are my own.

I’m always redecorating my house. I love to move the furniture around, change art, repaint walls, and dream about the lottery win that will pay for an addition to my home.

It drives my husband crazy. Not the lottery win—he’s all for that!—but the constant desire to change things up.

This embrace of change has everything to do with an evolving view of my home. Will the house function better for us if the couch is here instead of there? Will the books be easier to find if I reorganize them? These are the thoughts that enter my head, as I wash the dishes and commute to work.

So, when I was invited by the home decorating and design website, Wayfair, to add a “pop of color” to my house, I knew this was my spring home decorating fix.

Some background on my house: I live with my family in a 1960 mid-century modern ranch. We have a lot of open space, so incorporating color can be a challenge, as it has to work throughout. We’ve modernized the home, retaining several fun and unique mid-century features such the open floor plan and original built-ins in the bedrooms. We recently had several walls painted Benjamin Moore Superwhite to bounce more light around our space. My house is the perfect backdrop for Wayfair’s invitation.

But where to start? Where would I add my pop of color?

I started my search in my son’s room. Navigating around the user-friendly Wayfair website, I went to kids’ lamps. My son’s room has a space theme and this rocket lamp jumped out as a great way to continue the theme and incorporate his favorite color, red.

Next, I thought my daughter’s room which is painted Benjamin Moore Cream Yellow, with a yellow bedspread, and beige carpet.  It needed a little something more. For my girl, who sees the world in pink, purple, and sparkles, I cruised over to the kids’ section and found some afforable ways to add her vibrant pink personality to her space.

But, my kids are happy with their rooms. I’m the one who is looking for a change. Since there’s so much on the Wayfair website, I kept wandering about, wondering what I’d find at the end of the next click.

Our sun porch has been fairly neglected since we moved into our house two years ago, so I looked at outdoor chairs, and found these, which I loved for the bright green and cool shape.

But then, I realized that was I really wanted was to add some color and softness to my kitchen, the room where I spend the most time, despite not being the best cook in my house (that title belongs to my husband). My kitchen has the original metal cabinets from 1960, which are sort of taupey color. Sometimes, they even look mauve. The kitchen also features dark brown wood cabinets. The floor is a gold terrazzo, the walls are white, the countertops are gray, and the appliances are stainless steel. It’s full of neutrals.

A few weeks ago, I added a pear print on the wall, specifically because of that bold, beautiful green. I wanted to see if Wayfair could help extend that gorgeous color into the rest of the room.  And after a few more clicks, I found exactly what I was looking for: a Dash & Albert indoor-outdoor rug. I selected two throw rugs, and don’t they look great?

The rugs—one in front of my sink and the other in front of my stovetop—add that much-desired pop as well as some softness to a room normally filled with hard surfaces. I also love their versatility; I could use them in our neglected sun porch and in our front hall.
